What behind-the-wheel lessons get you in Arizona ↓

What behind-the-wheel lessons get you in Arizona

Behind-the-wheel lessons put a learner in a dual-control car with a professional instructor. For teens, finishing a driver education program also changes what MVD requires, which is often the main reason families pay for lessons.

What driver education changes for teens

  • Fewer practice hours. Without driver ed, a parent or guardian certifies 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. With a completed driver education program, the requirement drops to 20 hours, including 6 at night.
  • No MVD road test. ADOT waives the road test for teens who complete a high school or privately operated driver education program.
  • The permit still comes first. Teens need an instruction permit at 15½ and must hold it for 6 months before the license. See our Arizona permit test guide.

Ask any school whether its program is one MVD accepts for these benefits, and how completion gets reported, before you pay.

Lessons for adults

You don’t have to be a teen. Adults book lessons to get ready for the MVD road test, to build confidence on Phoenix freeways, or to learn Arizona roads after a move. Most schools sell single lessons as well as packages.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the school licensed by ADOT as a professional driver training school?
  • How many hours are actually behind the wheel, and how many are classroom or online?
  • Does the car have an instructor brake? Do they pick up from home, school or work?
  • Can they give the permit test at home, or the road test as an MVD Authorized Third Party? Some schools do both.
  • What’s the price per hour, and what happens if you cancel or need extra lessons?

Looking in a specific city? Use the city chips at the top of this page, or start with Phoenix, Tempe or Mesa.

Rules checked against ADOT’s teen permit and license rules, the MVD driving practice certificate in September 2026. Courts and MVD can change fees and procedures; confirm with them before you pay for anything.
